Gallows hill

In 1714, King Sigismund granted jus gladii, power of life and death, to the Abbey to arrest, convict and execute malefactors. The Akasztó-domb (Gallows Hill) was the spot where the gallows pole was erected.

A special fishing method, ‘the fish seen’ practised only in Tihany, is also connected to Akasztó-domb. One of the fishermen called the 'hill walker' would climb up to the top of the hill, where he would follow the movements of the pelecus shoal and signall to the fishermen waiting in the boat where they should lay their nets.
